View on the App Store: Birdstown - Kristina Nedzvetskaya

Features of Birdstown:

  • Recognise and learn to spell 15 different birds.
  • Easy mode helps younger ones learn the bird names and regular mode helps older ones learn to spell them too!
  • Gentle beautifully artistic app inspires children to learn about birds.
  • Dressing the birds in suitable attire adds some unique fun and enjoyment to reading this book.
  • Engages even your youngest toddler as you discover the 'secrets' held within each scene.
Learn 15 birds: Parrot, Swallow, Eagle, Owl, Ostrich, Wren, Woodpecker, Raven, Heron, Bullfinch, Pigeon, Magpie, Stork, Seagull and Penguin.

On each screen you start with an exquisite watercolour illustration of a bird.  On EASY mode, the names of the birds are already spelt correctly, in regular mode the letters are mixed up.

Your child must work out the NAME of the bird and the correct way to SPELL  it by dragging and dropping the letters around.  If they get it wrong it simply gives them another chance to try again, no timers or pressure.

Once the name is correct a KEY appears which UNLOCKS the next bird for you.

Within each picture you have extras activities.  Along the bottom of the screen you will see the handle of a suitcase poking out, pull it up and you will see that it contains some imaginative and creative 'bird clothing'.

Each bird has unique attire which is appropriate to that bird in some way or to where they are in the picture. It is really fun to 'dress' the bird by dragging the clothing it it, my little girl and boy laughed and loved this part...as did I!!

Within the picture there are other ways to interact.  These can be found by clicking on the white circles that appear on the screen.  Within each picture there are a few things to do that are achieved by touching the circles.  If you want to find them without clues, then select NO HINTS in the settings menu.

These include making smoke come from a chimney, turning lights on, blossoming flowers, launching ships and hot air balloons,  showing moon phases, changing seasons, starting spiders crawling, opening books and making it snow.    TIP - when the penguin takes a picture it is of YOU, so make sure you're ready with a smile!!
These activities are beautifully incorporated.

This is a wonderful app, educational, beautiful and perfectly balanced with interactivity. I am excited to see more Apps from this developer and more birds!
The app is available in 3 languages: English, French and Russian. This is great if you want to learn the bird names in another language.
