Review: Pocket Egg Race

A colourful egg themed board game for toddlers and young children including 10 activities

View on the App Store: Pocket Egg Race - urbn; pockets

Features of Pocket Egg Race:

  • Enhances patience, focus and practises turn taking.
  • Use Fine motor skills, balance and problem solving to complete the tasks.
  • Determination is required by little ones to see the game through to the end.
  • A great way to introduce your child to board games.
  • Good for relationship building between you and your child.
This toddler board game is based around an egg theme, I would suggest it is best played on the two players mode to complete it WITH your child.

Players are chicks, you personalise them by selecting headgear and then the game allows you to record a sound for your player.  (My little 4 year old recorded both our voices and it was so cute to hear 'Mummy Mummy' sung  in her adorable voice every time it was my turn.)

The game uses a traditional board game layout with a spinner to take your turn.  Spin the egg in the middle and it points to a number of moves forward. Spin and land on the fox and miss your turn, land on the flower to jump forward to the nearest flower and sometimes land on the minus 1.

Each time you land on a flower (10 possible times) you need to complete an activity.  Some of these are quite complex and may require you to help your young child.

A couple games that require you to balance the iPad flat and tilt it, including balancing the egg on the spoon and a maze, which is excellent to get used to this motion.
Fine motor skills are required for some of the games such as packing eggs into boxes.
Timing is tested as your child is required to jump the egg truck over the bumps to stop the eggs from falling out.
Intelligence and problem solving skills are is required to work out the egg machine puzzle and stacking the egg shelves.
Memory skills are enhanced as you remember what order the chickens make their clucks in order for them to lay their eggs.

If you get the activity right you see the picture of a chick and one star, getting it wrong brings up a fox picture and the perfect activity completion shows a hen with 2 stars and you get to move forward one space.

10 out of 10!

Age Group:

This game takes about 30 minutes to play so ensure you, as the parent, have the time to dedicate to it and ensure your child is in the right frame of mind to focus on a longer time objective.

It is a game of luck of the spin, you cannot really control who wins except during the activities. This is good because if you win your child can experience and start to understand how to be happy for the winner and not to mind if they loose. This is a very important lesson for young children to grasp and they may as well start it young.
